Information for A Found pet or Re-homing your pet.

What to do if you have found a Dog or Cat

  •  If circumstances allow, calmly get the dog. It is best if you sit on the ground and let the dog come to you. If the dog has a tag and or collar with information call and text the number that you have found the dog.

  • The next step is a process many do not know about it is referred to at the shelter as “offsite impound”. If the animal is found in the City of Fort Worth, take the animal to the shelter at 4900 Martin Street. Explain you found an animal and need to check for a chip and do offsite impound. If you need a name for reference ask for the wonderful rescue coordinator there, Ginger Leach.

    • It usually takes about 15 minutes and the city employees will check for a chip, vaccinate and heartworm/combo test the animal. They will also give the animal a dewormer and medication if they have fleas and ticks. The animal will then be online for 72-hour hold for anyone possibly looking for the animal. This is the best way for not only the animal to find his owners but also for the shelter to not be overcrowded. When the shelter is overcrowded, the city has to euthanize for space. THIS IS NOT THE SHELTER’S PROBLEM BUT A FORT WORTH CITIZEN PROBLEM.

  •  Then if possible, it is best to take the animal home to keep in a separate room while rescues can be messaged to see if there is room. Another option is to call your local vet and ask if you can board the animal for two nights.

  •  If there is no other option reach out to Saving Hope ONLY if all the steps above have been completed. All of the local shelters and rescues are completely full and busting at the seams.
